My Favorite Camera Kit for Event Photography: A Look Inside My Gear Bag

When it comes to event photography, having the right camera gear can make all the difference. Whether I’m shooting a wedding, corporate event, or family gathering, I rely on high-quality equipment that helps me capture the best possible moments, even in challenging conditions. Today, I want to give you an inside look at my favorite camera kit and why these pieces of equipment are essential for creating stunning event photos.

1. Nikon Z6II – My Main Workhorse

The Nikon Z6II is my go-to camera for most event shoots. It’s a full-frame mirrorless camera that delivers outstanding image quality, even in low-light conditions. For event photography, where lighting can often be unpredictable, the Z6II’s excellent autofocus system and superb image stabilization come in handy. The dual processors allow for faster performance, which is essential when capturing fast-paced events where I can’t afford to miss a moment.

  • Why I love it:
The Nikon Z6II’s versatility and reliability make it perfect for capturing everything from candid shots to posed portraits. It performs exceptionally well in a variety of lighting conditions, which is crucial for event photography.

2. Nikon Z6 – My Trusty Backup

In addition to the Z6II, I always have the Nikon Z6 as my backup camera. Having a second body on hand ensures I’m ready to go if there’s a technical issue, or if I want to switch lenses quickly without missing a shot. The Z6 shares many of the same qualities as the Z6II, including excellent image quality and low-light performance, making it an ideal secondary camera.

  • Why I love it:
The Z6 is reliable, compact, and offers the same great image quality as the Z6II. It’s always a smart idea to have a backup, and the Z6 is a camera I can depend on for any event.

3. Nikon 28-75mm f/2.8 Lens – My All-Around Favorite

The Nikon 28-75mm f/2.8 lens is one of my go-to lenses for event photography. This focal range gives me the flexibility to capture wide shots of the venue and intimate close-ups without needing to switch lenses constantly. The f/2.8 aperture also provides great depth of field and performs beautifully in low light.

  • Why I love it:
This lens is versatile, sharp, and works perfectly in a wide range of scenarios. Whether I’m capturing group shots or portraits, the 28-75mm focal length allows me to cover all the angles.

4. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 G Lens – A Classic Workhorse

The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 G lens is another essential piece of my kit. Known for its sharpness and reliability, this lens covers a wide range of focal lengths, which makes it perfect for capturing everything from wide-angle venue shots to mid-range portraits. The f/2.8 aperture also helps me achieve a nice bokeh effect in portraits while keeping the subject in sharp focus.

  • Why I love it:
This is a classic lens for a reason. Its build quality is superb, and it provides consistent results throughout the entire zoom range. It’s a lens I trust for event photography because of its performance and reliability.

5. Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 Lens – For Stunning Portraits

The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 lens is my go-to portrait lens during events. With its longer focal length and wide f/1.8 aperture, this lens allows me to capture stunning, creamy bokeh while keeping my subjects sharp. It’s perfect for creating those beautifully isolated portraits that clients love. Whether it’s a bride, a speaker at a corporate event, or family members at a gathering, this lens helps me capture those close-up, intimate moments.

  • Why I love it:
The Viltrox 85mm delivers beautiful image quality, especially when it comes to portraits. Its wide aperture allows for great background separation, making it ideal for individual or couple shots.

6. Godox AD200 Flash – My Lighting Savior

Lighting can often be unpredictable at events, so I always come prepared with the Godox AD200 flash. This portable and powerful flash unit provides excellent lighting in both indoor and outdoor settings. Whether I’m shooting in dimly lit rooms or during an outdoor evening event, the AD200 allows me to add just the right amount of light to bring out the best in every shot.

  • Why I love it:
The Godox AD200 offers flexibility and power in a compact package. It’s easy to set up and provides consistent results, making it an essential tool for events where lighting conditions are challenging.

7. MagMod Color Gels – Adding Creativity to My Shots

To add a creative touch to my event photography, I use MagMod Color Gels. These gels are magnetic and attach easily to my flashes, allowing me to add splashes of color or correct the color temperature in different lighting environments. Whether I’m looking to warm up a scene or create a more dramatic effect, these gels give me the freedom to experiment with color and lighting in real time.

MagMod Color Gels are quick to attach and open up a world of creative possibilities with minimal effort. They’re a fun and effective way to enhance the mood of an event through lighting.
